IDG's Computerworld Honors Program recently named Indiana University as a 2013 Laureate. IU earned the distinction for its pioneering eTexts initiative and recent wireless network upgrade to ensure reliable and secure access to digital materials.

The TechPoint Mira Awards recognized Indiana University for the deployment of IUanyWare, a cloud-based service that provides IU students, faculty and staff with on-demand access to over 200 software applications. IU received the Technology in Education Excellence & Innovation Award.

IUanyWare, Indiana University's cloud software service, is a 2013 recipient of ACUTA's prestigious Institutional Excellence award. ACUTA (the Association for Information Communications Technology Professionals in Higher Education) is an international nonprofit dedicated to serving the needs of higher education, including nearly 2,000 individuals at some 700 institutions.

IU's new cloud software service, IUanyWare, is a finalist for a TechPoint Mira Award in "Technology in Education Excellence & Innovation." TechPoint is a nonprofit organization that represents Indiana's technology community. Since 2000, the Mira Awards have recognized the movers and shakers of the state's IT industry.

Thomas Sterling, executive associate director of the Center for Research in Extreme Scale Technologies (CREST) and professor of computer science in the IU School of Informatics and Computing, has been named an HPCwire person to watch in 2013. The publication's annual list features 12 movers and shakers whose reach extends beyond high performance computing (HPC) to shape future directions of technology, propelling scientific and engineering advancements.

Indiana University's IT Communications Office recently received several awards from the Chicago chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC). The awards are part of the STC's 2012 Technical Communications Competition.

"Advanced Networking Initiatives at Indiana University," produced by IT Communications under the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology and CIO, won a CASE District V award for Best Annual Report.

Indiana University networking experts were recently recognized by Internet2 for their efforts to enhance broadband connectivity and support advanced services and cloud applications across the United States. Their efforts will help provide advanced networking features for more than 200,000 of the country's community anchor institutions, including libraries, hospitals, K-12 schools, community colleges and public safety organizations.

QuakeSim, an Indiana University-supported collection of online data and tools from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and multiple university partners, is a recipient of NASA's 2012 Software of the Year Award. The award recognizes innovative software technologies that significantly improve the agency's space exploration and maximize scientific discovery on Earth.

A recent National Science Foundation (NSF) grant will further enable Indiana University to help scientists solve their toughest data problems. The NSF has selected Indiana University as a partner in a grant to create the Science Gateway Institute.

Two new grants to Indiana University from the Global Environment for Network Innovations (GENI) will provide training for network administrators and a service desk for problem reporting and project coordination. Both initiatives will support GENI, a nationwide experimental network research infrastructure sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

Indiana University has again been chosen by the National Science Foundation's GENI project to lead applied research for faster and cheaper computer networks. Four new grants totaling $2.3 million further advance the state's national stature in operating and researching high-speed computer networks.

Leaders from Indiana University, Internet2, and the China Education and Research Network (CERNET) met Friday, Nov. 4, at Georgetown University to celebrate their cooperative partnership linking the education and research networks of the United States and China.

The Midwest OpenFlow Crossroads Initiative (MOXI) will provide a new OpenFlow based experimental network infrastructure to CIC member institutions in the Midwest. MOXI is a partnership of the Indiana University Global Research Network Operations Center (GlobalNOC) and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), a consortium of the top-tier research universities of the Big Ten Athletic Conference and the University of Chicago.

The award is the latest in IU's series of large-scale international networking grants received within the past decade. The IU GlobalNOC currently leads international networks such as TransPAC3 to Asia and America Connects to Europe (ACE).

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Indiana University a $1.5-million grant to establish the National Center for Genome Analysis Support (NCGAS). Genome analysis can help scientists discover new medicines, improve crops, understand diseases, and create personalized treatments for various illnesses.

Indiana University's Stephen Simms has been elected to the Community Representative board seat for OpenSFS. Simms is the Data Capacitor project lead and manager of the High Performance File Systems group. He spearheads IU's development of the Lustre file system, and is the university's representative to OpenSFS. OpenSFS is a technical organization that promotes collaboration among institutions using open source scalable file systems in high performance computing environments.

Indiana University's Summer of Networking internship program, which provides students with hands-on, practical training from the university's acclaimed network engineering staff, has received a two-year, $270,595 grant from the National Science Foundation. Indiana University alumnus David Harper was a winner in the ninth annual Adobe Design Achievement Awards, presented in October at the Icograda World Design Congress 2009 in Beijing. Harper's project, "Veins of Life," won in the Motion Graphics category and was one of only 12 winners selected by a panel of industry leaders from among 3,300 submissions by students from 37 countries.

Researchers from the Pervasive Technology Institute Digital Science Center at Indiana University have begun work on an innovative project that will use cloud computing techniques to support life science research. The project is supported by a $1.5 million grant award from the National Institutes of Health and takes advantage of an earlier National Science Foundation grant to IU to construct an experimental supercomputing network called FutureGrid.

Indiana University has been chosen by the National Science Foundation to help develop the Internet of the future. Under the grant, IU will explore the operation and deployment of the NSF-sponsored infrastructure for network research known as GENI (Global Environment for Network Innovations). This award follows an earlier NSF grant to IU to construct an experimental supercomputing network called FutureGrid, which will enable new approaches to scientific research.

2009 has been a year to remember for Geoffrey Fox, Indiana University computational scientist. And according to HPCwire, the popular computing publication, in 2010 Fox will be someone to watch. Fox has been named one of the high performance computing "People to Watch in 2010" by the online magazine. The annual list recognizes "the most influential, interesting and promising personalities having an impact on the world of High Performance Computing."

As computer network experiments increase in complexity and size, it has become increasingly difficult to fully understand the circumstances under which a network experiment was run, particularly when it comes time to reproduce the results. A collaborative team from Indiana University will lead the effort to provide essential tools related to the history and authenticity of an experiment's data set (called "provenance") for the Global Environment for Network Innovations (GENI) computer network.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded $538,595 to the Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research to support a two-year project titled "Protecting Privacy in Health Research." The IU-led project assembles a blue-ribbon panel of experts in medical research, privacy, security, law, ethics, and patient advocacy from eleven national and international partner organizations.

Top students and faculty at Indiana University will benefit from the selection of Indiana University as a "First Wave" participant in a new Sony scholarship program. Sony Electronics, with the support of Intel, has invited Indiana University as part of a select group of institutions, to participate in the program whereby select students and faculty are awarded grants that will provide the tools necessary to continue their academic excellence.

The future of scientific computing will be developed with the leadership of Indiana University and nine national and international partners as part of a $15 million project largely supported by a $10.1 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The award will be used to establish FutureGrid—one of only two experimental systems in the NSF Track 2 program that funds the most powerful, next-generation scientific supercomputers in the nation.

Five teams of IU researchers are the recipients of more than $230,000 in internal grants that are designed to provide start-up funding for innovative research addressing critical cybersecurity needs. Indiana University Bloomington Provost Karen Hansen and Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs Tom Gieryn have announced that two Indiana University Bloomington professors will receive prestigious university awards. David E. Clemmer, the Robert and Marjorie Mann Chair of Chemistry, will receive the 2009 Tracy M. Sonneborn Award, and Lisa Pratt, professor of geological sciences, will be named the inaugural Provost's Professor.

When it comes to geographic information systems (GIS), Indiana University is definitely on the map. So says the Indiana Geographic Information Council (IGIC), which presented a group of IU researchers from University Information Technology Services and the IU Pervasive Technology Institute with the David C. Ford award for exemplary service, dedication, and accomplishment in coordinating Indiana GIS. The award is named in honor of Indiana State Senator David C. Ford (1949-2008), a recognized leader and supporter of GIS technology and legislation within the state of Indiana.

The "ClusterMeisters," a team of students from the Indiana University School of Informatics and Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) were awarded first place in the SC08 Cluster Challenge, an international collegiate competition for leading-edge, energy-efficient high performance computing.

Java Architectures (JA-SIG), a leading international consortium supporting open source software in higher education, recently announced the election of Indiana University's Barry Walsh to a second three-year term on its Board of Directors, along with his subsequent selection as Board Chair. In this position, Walsh will contribute his national leadership in community source and enterprise application integration, helping shape the future of shared technology for higher education.

Indiana University has been awarded $336,000 to help launch a new experimental network research infrastructure that one day will lead to the future of the Internet. Part of the Global Environment for Network Innovations (GENI) Project, IU is among 29 academic and industrial research teams to receive subcontract awards totaling $12 million to develop a national-scale suite of infrastructure for experimental research in groundbreaking network science and engineering.

Each year, technical communications organizations gather to recognize outstanding work in the field. This year, numerous Indiana University information technology communicators have been honored by their peers. Four IU communications products will be recognized by the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on University and College Computing Services. Three of these were awarded best of category. The Society for Technical Communication also presented a Distinguished Award, an International Award of Merit, and three Awards of Excellence to IU communicators earlier this year.

The Indiana University Faculty Podcasting Initiative will support more than 60 innovative faculty members as they explore the potential of podcasting in higher education and student learning. Supported by Apple and AT&T with equipment and software -- and with the guidance of the IU centers for teaching and learning -- faculty projects will commence in the fall semester of 2008.

The National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) is presenting Indiana University with the association's 2008 Innovation Award.

IU digital artist Margaret Dolinsky is the 2008 Outstanding Educator in Science, Technology, and Engineering. Presented by the Women and Hi Tech organization, the award acknowledges the tremendous impact educators have on their students and the role they play in creating opportunities for growth and development. Dolinsky holds a dual appointment as an assistant professor in the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts at Indiana University Bloomington and as a research scientist in the IU Advanced Visualization Lab (AVL).

Indiana University staff member Debby Allmayer, who serves as the human resources officer for the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology and CIO, was honored with the 2008 Indiana University Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Building Bridges Community Award during a ceremony held on the Bloomington campus on January 21. The Building Bridges Award honors members of the community who display the leadership and social consciousness embodied by Dr. King. For many years, Allmayer has contributed greatly to the IU and the Bloomington communities with her steadfast commitment to social justice and outreach.

University Information Technology Services (UITS) Database and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist Anna Radue was recently elected to the board of directors of Indiana's premier GIS organization. Radue will serve a three-year term on the board of the Indiana Geographic Information Council (IGIC), a nonprofit organization of GIS users, professionals, and educators recognized as the coordinating body for all geographic information in Indiana. At Indiana University, Radue, who is also an IU alumna, provides GIS and remote sensing technical support to all IU campuses throughout the state.

David E. Jent, associate vice president for networks at Indiana University, has been elected to serve on the Internet2 Advisory Council after its first election.

Indiana University's work with geographic information system (GIS) software was recognized recently with a Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award at the 27th Annual ESRI International User Conference in San Diego, Calif. IU stood out from more than 300,000 organizations worldwide that use GIS software to make a difference in the world.

The Indiana University Bloomington SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) team won high honors after participating in the SIFE USA National Exposition, May 6-8, in Dallas, Texas. After presenting a report of its year-long community outreach projects, the IUB SIFE team was awarded second runner-up in the "4-Year Division Opening Round Competition."
