The agreements -- with publishers John Wiley & Sons Inc.; Bedford Freeman & Worth Publishing Group; W.W. Norton; McGraw-Hill Education; and Flat World Knowledge -- will provide enrolled IU students substantial cost-savings, the ability to access digital or printed hard copies, and uninterrupted access to all of their eTexts. Indiana-based company Courseload was selected to provide the software for students to read and annotate their eTexts. The software integrates directly with IU's Oncourse system and enables students to tag, search, collaborate as a study group or view multimedia on any computer or mobile device. Additionally, faculty who opt to use the software will have the ability to integrate notes, links and annotations on students' eTexts.

IU Mobile is live on all IU campuses and was ready for students when they arrived this fall. Each campus can tailor its information channels to meet its needs, and all previous IU Mobile services -- including athletics scores, class schedules, course content and bus routes -- will be accessible through the new service. The new system also makes it much easier for IU students, faculty and staff to add services to their mobile devices.

On April 21, Indiana University and Technische Universität will co-host a hands-on workshop on Vampir, a tool designed to conduct performance analyses and diagnose problems in serial and parallel supercomputing applications. Indiana University alumnus David Harper was a winner in the ninth annual Adobe Design Achievement Awards, presented in October at the Icograda World Design Congress 2009 in Beijing. Researchers from the Pervasive Technology Institute Digital Science Center at Indiana University have begun work on an innovative project that will use cloud computing techniques to support life science research. The project is supported by a $1.5 million grant award from the National Institutes of Health and takes advantage of an earlier National Science Foundation grant to IU to construct an experimental supercomputing network called FutureGrid.

A web tool developed by Indiana University is helping to monitor and assure the health of the two largest computational grids that support the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's most powerful particle accelerator. As computer network experiments increase in complexity and size, it has become increasingly difficult to fully understand the circumstances under which a network experiment was run, particularly when it comes time to reproduce the results. The future of scientific computing will be developed with the leadership of Indiana University and nine national and international partners as part of a $15 million project largely supported by a $10.1 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The award will be used to establish FutureGrid—one of only two experimental systems in the NSF Track 2 program that funds the most powerful, next-generation scientific supercomputers in the nation.

Translational medicine researchers from across the country can now access a range of data and advanced technology resources using the user ID and password of their home institution. The Indiana Clinical Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) HUB provides federated identity management -- allowing researchers to use resources such as medical databases, high performance computers, and life science visualization tools in multiple distributed locations without the need to remember yet another password and login procedure.

Indiana University's Data Capacitor, designed to store and manipulate massive data sets and based on the Lustre filesystem, is being used across the wide area network of the TeraGrid to enable projects ranging from investigating planetary origins to measuring the melting polar icecaps of Earth.

When it comes to geographic information systems (GIS), Indiana University is definitely on the map. So says the Indiana Geographic Information Council (IGIC), which presented a group of IU researchers from University Information Technology Services and the IU Pervasive Technology Institute with the David C. Ford award for exemplary service, dedication, and accomplishment in coordinating Indiana GIS. The award is named in honor of Indiana State Senator David C. Ford (1949-2008), a recognized leader and supporter of GIS technology and legislation within the state of Indiana.

The "ClusterMeisters," a team of students from the Indiana University School of Informatics and Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) were awarded first place in the SC08 Cluster Challenge, an international collegiate competition for leading-edge, energy-efficient high performance computing.

Indiana University, the National Science Foundation, the Pakistan Higher Education Commission, and the European Commission have partnered to extend the NSF-funded TransPAC2 network managed by IU to connect scientists and researchers in Pakistan to their counterparts in the global scientific community.

The "ClusterMeisters," a team of undergraduates from Indiana University and Technische Universität Dresden, will compete in the 2008 Cluster Challenge at SC08, the premier international conference for high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis. Indiana University has been awarded $336,000 to help launch a new experimental network research infrastructure that one day will lead to the future of the Internet. Part of the Global Environment for Network Innovations (GENI) Project, IU is among 29 academic and industrial research teams to receive subcontract awards totaling $12 million to develop a national-scale suite of infrastructure for experimental research in groundbreaking network science and engineering.

Indiana University, a leader in international networking within the global research community, will host the Chinese-American Network Symposium Oct. 20-22 on its Indianapolis campus, bringing together more than 100 networking experts from the United States and China.

Environmental scientists studying the world's shrinking polar ice sheets will soon get a substantial boost in computing power thanks to IU's Polar Grid Project. Funded by a $1.96 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Indiana University and Polar Grid partners Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) and the NSF's Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS), headquartered at the University of Kansas, are poised this week to deploy a collection of customized computational resources to Antarctica that will allow scientists -- both on site and remotely -- to more securely and efficiently process data during polar field expeditions.

Both Google and Microsoft representatives are coming to IU Bloomington in September to bring the message of their educational offerings to students. Earlier this year Indiana University partnered with both Google and Microsoft to provide a choice for students and alumni on all IU campuses for enhanced email and collaboration services. As part of the partnership, IU recently launched Imail (powered by Microsoft) and Umail (powered by Google).

The 4th International Conference on e-Science, hosted by Indiana University, will bring together leading international and interdisciplinary research communities, developers, and users of e-Science applications and enabling IT technologies. Fifty of the nation's information technology (IT) leaders have convened on the IUPUI campus this week to draft a national strategy for coordinating the nation's most advanced IT resources to promote innovation, research productivity, and US global competitiveness. The meeting brings together leaders from two key national organizations - the Coalition for Academic Scientific Computing (CASC) and the EDUCAUSE Committee on Campus Cyberinfrastructure. The workshop will result in a report recommending steps universities can implement collaboratively to accelerate research.

The Indiana University Faculty Podcasting Initiative will support more than 60 innovative faculty members as they explore the potential of podcasting in higher education and student learning. Supported by Apple and AT&T with equipment and software -- and with the guidance of the IU centers for teaching and learning -- faculty projects will commence in the fall semester of 2008.

The University of Chicago and Indiana University announced today that use of the TeraGrid Knowledge Base, a 24/7 online user-driven support system for the TeraGrid, has passed two significant milestones. The TeraGrid Knowledge Base now includes more than 250 articles and during 2007 was accessed by U.S. researchers and information technologists more than 140,000 times. During December alone, the TeraGrid Knowledge Base was accessed nearly 20,000 times.

Indiana University has partnered with Google and Microsoft to deliver enhanced email and collaboration services to all IU students and alumni on all IU campuses. The partnership allows IU students and alumni to access these popular commercial services while still maintaining their traditional IU email addresses. Students who use these services now will be able to continue receiving mail at their IU email addresses (e.g.: jdoe@iupui.edu or jdoe@iusb.edu) long into the future.

The Sakai Foundation recently announced the election of Indiana University's Lance D. Speelmon to its board of directors. In this role, Speelmon will participate in foundation governance and in determining priorities for Sakai's development of open-source course management tools and its related higher education software for teaching, learning, research, and collaborative applications.

Indiana University and Zayo Bandwidth announced that they have reached consensus on previously reported concerns regarding the acquisition of Indiana Fiber Works. As a result, IU has withdrawn its request to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to suspend the acquisition of IFW to Zayo.

IBM announced today it will establish a worldwide center for developing products and applications using its advanced Cell chip technology at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis -- the first such IBM facility on a college campus. IBM plans to staff the new 2,000-square-foot Future Technology Solution Design Center located in the university's Informatics and Communications Technology Complex with five professionals who will develop new products and applications based on advanced Cell processor technology.

Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie and Scott A. Jones, co-founder and chief executive officer of ChaCha, an Indiana company that is creating a new and more focused way of providing Internet searches, today (Aug. 2) announced they have entered into a strategic alliance for research, development and services for the next generation of Internet search tools and practices.

The Indiana Office of Technology and Indiana University have signed an agreement for IU to provide backup data center space and network connectivity to the state. The partnership takes advantage of IU's information technology staff and its IT infrastructure -- the I-Light high-speed network and the data center at IU Bloomington -- to provide critical redundancy and save money for the state. It also serves as a basis for further partnership and collaboration between the state and IU.

Microsoft Corp., along with the Research and Education Networking Information Sharing and Analysis Center (REN-ISAC), established in 2003 by Indiana University, announced a new alliance this week that will extend the reach of the Microsoft® Security Cooperation Program (SCP) to include higher education institutions in its mission to enhance security measures worldwide.
