Indiana University's new supercomputer is expected to further advance international collaborations reliant on big data research at a time when the globalization of education, science and research is omnipresent.

Thomas Sterling, executive associate director of the Center for Research in Extreme Scale Technologies (CREST) and professor of computer science in the IU School of Informatics and Computing, has been named an HPCwire person to watch in 2013. The publication's annual list features 12 movers and shakers whose reach extends beyond high performance computing (HPC) to shape future directions of technology, propelling scientific and engineering advancements.

The Indiana Center for Network Translational Research and Education (InCNTRE) has announced that Steve Wallace will step into the role of acting executive director. Wallace succeeds Matt Davy, who is transitioning to a new position in the private sector.

Indiana University's IT Communications Office recently received several awards from the Chicago chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC). The awards are part of the STC's 2012 Technical Communications Competition.

"Advanced Networking Initiatives at Indiana University," produced by IT Communications under the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology and CIO, won a CASE District V award for Best Annual Report.

Indiana University has been selected as the new home for the US Desk Editor of the online publication International Science Grid this Week (iSGTW: isgtw.org), supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Indiana University networking experts were recently recognized by Internet2 for their efforts to enhance broadband connectivity and support advanced services and cloud applications across the United States. Their efforts will help provide advanced networking features for more than 200,000 of the country's community anchor institutions, including libraries, hospitals, K-12 schools, community colleges and public safety organizations.

QuakeSim, an Indiana University-supported collection of online data and tools from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and multiple university partners, is a recipient of NASA's 2012 Software of the Year Award. The award recognizes innovative software technologies that significantly improve the agency's space exploration and maximize scientific discovery on Earth.

The Apache Software Foundation recently asked Suresh Marru of the Indiana University Pervasive Technology Institute to join its exclusive membership. This honor is bestowed on IT developers whose skills have significantly contributed to the foundation's projects.

IDG's CIO magazine has honored Indiana University as a recipient of the 2012 CIO 100 award. The 25th annual award recognizes organizations around the world that exemplify operational and strategic excellence in information technology.

The Sakai Foundation recently selected its 2012 Sakai Fellows, and three of the six recipients have direct ties to Indiana University. IU's Chris Maurer and Lynn Ward received the honor along with former employee Lance Speelmon.

In January 2012, the Data to Insight Center, part of Pervasive Technology Institute at Indiana University, hosted a National Science Foundation-sponsored workshop in Indianapolis that brought together approximately 70 researchers from around the world to tackle the challenges of scientific data.

Indiana University's Stephen Simms has been elected to the Community Representative board seat for OpenSFS. Simms is the Data Capacitor project lead and manager of the High Performance File Systems group. He spearheads IU's development of the Lustre file system, and is the university's representative to OpenSFS. OpenSFS is a technical organization that promotes collaboration among institutions using open source scalable file systems in high performance computing environments.

Robert Lowden has been appointed associate vice president for enterprise software at Indiana University, effective August 1, 2011. The position leads all of the major software systems that serve the campuses of Indiana University.

Kuali Coeus, Indiana University's new, comprehensive grant administration system designed to better assist faculty researchers at every stage of the grant-making process, became fully operational over the weekend (July 23-24).

Pervasive Technology Institute at Indiana University announced today (December 17) that Andrew Lumsdaine and Jeremiah Willcock of its Open Systems Lab (OSL) are part of an international team that developed the "Search" benchmark for the Graph 500 List. This benchmark evaluates a system's ability to traverse extremely large data structures.

A paper co-authored by Dr. Andrew Lumsdaine, director of the Open Systems Lab (OSL) at the Indiana University Pervasive Technology Institute, and former OSL researchers Torsten Hoefler (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) and Timo Schneider (University of Technology Chemnitz) has received Supercomputing 2010's Best Paper accolade. As the premier annual international supercomputing conference, Supercomputing 2010 drew thousands of participants from all over the world.

Indiana University again starred in the 2010 SIGUCCS Communications Awards, earning three "Best of Category" awards; setting a standard for IT communications in higher education. ACM SIGUCCS recognizes university and college computing centers that produce outstanding web sites, publications, and promotional materials, which enhance user services and offer attendees an opportunity to garner ideas to develop their own efforts.

The Data to Insight Center, part of Pervasive Technology Institute at Indiana University, has just announced the addition of several new staff members. Led by computer scientist and School of Informatics and Computing faculty member Beth Plale, the Center focuses on three research thrusts: Scientific data preservation and sustainability, climate and the environment, and data at scale. D2I has received funding for several new research projects in recent months and is experiencing a period of rapid growth.

Chris Robb has been promoted to the position of director of network operations and engineering for Internet2 where he has been network operations manager since 2008 and responsible for the day-to-day operations of the nationwide Internet2 Network infrastructure. As an assigned staff member from the Indiana University Global Research Network Operations Center (GlobalNOC), Robb will continue to be located in Bloomington, Indiana.

This past fall, Sony selected IU as a "First Wave" participant in its latest scholarship program. The program supports Empowering People, IU's strategic plan for information technology, fostering faculty excellence, enhancing student success, and making available abundant teaching and learning technology resources.

IU Vice President for Information Technology and CIO Brad Wheeler has appointed Jon-Paul Herron director of IU Global Research Network Operations Center (GRNOC) Engineering, where he will oversee IU's prestigious national services in research and education networking operations and planning. Herron has been at Indiana University for nearly 10 years.

Indiana University alumnus David Harper was a winner in the ninth annual Adobe Design Achievement Awards, presented in October at the Icograda World Design Congress 2009 in Beijing. Harper's project, "Veins of Life," won in the Motion Graphics category and was one of only 12 winners selected by a panel of industry leaders from among 3,300 submissions by students from 37 countries.

Indiana University staff members at IU Bloomington and IUPUI consistently achieve a level of excellence in communication that meets and exceeds the highest standards according to a leading standard bearer, the Society for Technical Communication (STC). IU won top awards again this year in the STC's annual Chicago Chapter competition.

2009 has been a year to remember for Geoffrey Fox, Indiana University computational scientist. And according to HPCwire, the popular computing publication, in 2010 Fox will be someone to watch. Fox has been named one of the high performance computing "People to Watch in 2010" by the online magazine. The annual list recognizes "the most influential, interesting and promising personalities having an impact on the world of High Performance Computing."

Dr. Thomas Sterling, renowned professor of computer science at Louisiana State University, will present the inaugural lecture in Indiana University's Peebles Lectures in Information Technology series. All interested parties are invited to attend. Sterling is best known as the father of the Beowulf cluster and for his work on petascale computing.

As computer network experiments increase in complexity and size, it has become increasingly difficult to fully understand the circumstances under which a network experiment was run, particularly when it comes time to reproduce the results. A collaborative team from Indiana University will lead the effort to provide essential tools related to the history and authenticity of an experiment's data set (called "provenance") for the Global Environment for Network Innovations (GENI) computer network.

Don Tapscott, internationally renowned author and authority on the impact of information technology on business strategy, education, and culture, will speak at Indiana University. As the keynote speaker for the 14th annual IU Statewide Information Technology Conference, Tapscott is scheduled to present "The Net Generation and the Reinvention of the University" on Thursday, October 1, at 4 p.m. at the IUPUI Campus Center.

Five teams of IU researchers are the recipients of more than $230,000 in internal grants that are designed to provide start-up funding for innovative research addressing critical cybersecurity needs. The grants were awarded by the Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research (CACR), part of the Pervasive Technology Institute at Indiana University.

IU has been recognized among the top 100 organizations in the nation by CIO magazine for its leadership in new software development models for higher education. The 22nd CIO 100 Awards recognized the IU Office of the Vice President for Information Technology (OVPIT) for its leadership in developing open source software with dozens of colleges, universities and commercial partners.

Several staff members at Indiana University have been recognized for the superior quality of their work by the Society for Technical Communication (STC) in its Chicago Chapter and International 2008-09 annual competitions of technical publications, art, and online communication.

When it comes to geographic information systems (GIS), Indiana University is definitely on the map. So says the Indiana Geographic Information Council (IGIC), which presented a group of IU researchers from University Information Technology Services and the IU Pervasive Technology Institute with the David C. Ford award for exemplary service, dedication, and accomplishment in coordinating Indiana GIS. The award is named in honor of Indiana State Senator David C. Ford (1949-2008), a recognized leader and supporter of GIS technology and legislation within the state of Indiana.

Noted writer, speaker, and educator John Seely Brown will discuss learning in the digital age at guest lectures on IU's Bloomington, Indianapolis, and South Bend campuses April 2-3, 2009. Brown is currently a visiting scholar at the University of Southern California and serves as an independent co-chairman for the Deloitte Center for Edge Innovation. Formerly, Brown served as the chief scientist at Xerox Corporation and the director of its Palo Alto Research Center.

IU Vice President for IT Brad Wheeler today (Feb. 5) announced the appointment of David W. Lewis as assistant vice president for digital scholarly communications in the Indiana University Office of the Vice President for Information Technology, in addition to his campus responsibilities as dean of University Library at IUPUI. In his new role, Lewis will provide university-wide leadership for Recommendation 12, "Recapturing the Scholarly Record," which is described as a grand challenge in Empowering People, IU's strategic IT plan.

Java Architectures (JA-SIG), a leading international consortium supporting open source software in higher education, recently announced the election of Indiana University's Barry Walsh to a second three-year term on its Board of Directors, along with his subsequent selection as Board Chair. In this position, Walsh will contribute his national leadership in community source and enterprise application integration, helping shape the future of shared technology for higher education.

The "ClusterMeisters," a team of undergraduates from Indiana University and Technische Universität Dresden, will compete in the 2008 Cluster Challenge at SC08, the premier international conference for high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis. SC, formerly known as Supercomputing, celebrates its 20th anniversary when it opens November 17, 2008 in Austin, Texas. The goal of the Cluster Challenge competition is to showcase the ability of clusters and open-source software to solve interesting and important problems, and to expose undergraduates to state-of-the-art systems and the best and brightest of their peers.

On the stage at Indiana University's 13th annual Statewide Information Technology Conference, a panel of deans, professors and leaders from across the university discussed IT and the future of IU. Three of those panelists sat on the stage in Bloomington. The other two appeared on high definition television screens and addressed the audience of IU IT professionals from locations across Indiana using the I-Light high-speed network.

Each year, technical communications organizations gather to recognize outstanding work in the field. This year, numerous Indiana University information technology communicators have been honored by their peers. Four IU communications products will be recognized by the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on University and College Computing Services. Three of these were awarded best of category. The Society for Technical Communication also presented a Distinguished Award, an International Award of Merit, and three Awards of Excellence to IU communicators earlier this year.

Indiana University Associate Dean for Research Technologies Dr. Craig Stewart, today (July 31) testifies before the United States House of Representatives Committee on Science and Technology on the conclusions published in the 2007 President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology report: Leadership Under Challenge: Information Technology R&D in a Competitive World.

The Office of the Vice President for Information Technology and CIO at Indiana University has announced a series of appointments in the leadership team of its Research Technologies division to expand IU's role in advanced information technology and its applications in scholarly discovery and artistic creation. The Research Technologies (RT) division of University Information Technology Services (UITS) at IU supports next generation research through delivery and support of advanced cyberinfrastructure. RT also works to create the cyberinfrastructure of tomorrow through collaboration with IU computer scientists and involvement in national projects such as the TeraGrid and Open Science Grid.

Indiana University staff member Debby Allmayer, who serves as the human resources officer for the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology and CIO, was honored with the 2008 Indiana University Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Building Bridges Community Award during a ceremony held on the Bloomington campus on January 21. The Building Bridges Award honors members of the community who display the leadership and social consciousness embodied by Dr. King. For many years, Allmayer has contributed greatly to the IU and the Bloomington communities with her steadfast commitment to social justice and outreach.

University Information Technology Services (UITS) Database and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist Anna Radue was recently elected to the board of directors of Indiana's premier GIS organization. Radue will serve a three-year term on the board of the Indiana Geographic Information Council (IGIC), a nonprofit organization of GIS users, professionals, and educators recognized as the coordinating body for all geographic information in Indiana. At Indiana University, Radue, who is also an IU alumna, provides GIS and remote sensing technical support to all IU campuses throughout the state.

The Sakai Foundation recently announced the election of Indiana University's Lance D. Speelmon to its board of directors. In this role, Speelmon will participate in foundation governance and in determining priorities for Sakai's development of open-source course management tools and its related higher education software for teaching, learning, research, and collaborative applications.

Indiana University's work with geographic information system (GIS) software was recognized recently with a Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award at the 27th Annual ESRI International User Conference in San Diego, Calif. IU stood out from more than 300,000 organizations worldwide that use GIS software to make a difference in the world.

Indiana University President Michael McRobbie today (July 13) named Bradley C. Wheeler vice president for information technology. Wheeler is IU acting chief information officer and dean of information technology for IU Bloomington and a professor of information systems in the Kelley School of Business. Wheeler, who will succeed McRobbie as vice president for information technology, has been a member of IU's information technology leadership team for the last five years.
