The agreements -- with publishers John Wiley & Sons Inc.; Bedford Freeman & Worth Publishing Group; W.W. Norton; McGraw-Hill Education; and Flat World Knowledge -- will provide enrolled IU students substantial cost-savings, the ability to access digital or printed hard copies, and uninterrupted access to all of their eTexts. Indiana-based company Courseload was selected to provide the software for students to read and annotate their eTexts. The software integrates directly with IU's Oncourse system and enables students to tag, search, collaborate as a study group or view multimedia on any computer or mobile device. Additionally, faculty who opt to use the software will have the ability to integrate notes, links and annotations on students' eTexts.

Fresh off last week's announcement of pioneering eTexts agreements, IU announced today (Sept. 15) an additional agreement with McGraw-Hill Education to deliver eTexts for students on all IU campuses. By some accounts, McGraw-Hill Education is IU's largest supplier of course materials.

Indiana University alumnus David Harper was a winner in the ninth annual Adobe Design Achievement Awards, presented in October at the Icograda World Design Congress 2009 in Beijing. This is the first such agreement between AT&T and a university. When it comes to geographic information systems (GIS), Indiana University is definitely on the map. So says the Indiana Geographic Information Council (IGIC), which presented a group of IU researchers from University Information Technology Services and the IU Pervasive Technology Institute with the David C. Ford award for exemplary service, dedication, and accomplishment in coordinating Indiana GIS. The award is named in honor of Indiana State Senator David C. Ford (1949-2008), a recognized leader and supporter of GIS technology and legislation within the state of Indiana.

Noted writer, speaker, and educator John Seely Brown will discuss learning in the digital age at guest lectures on IU's Bloomington, Indianapolis, and South Bend campuses April 2-3, 2009. Brown is currently a visiting scholar at the University of Southern California and serves as an independent co-chairman for the Deloitte Center for Edge Innovation. Formerly, Brown served as the chief scientist at Xerox Corporation and the director of its Palo Alto Research Center.

A new Indiana University internship program will provide students with valuable experience on the business side of life sciences information technology, while interns apply traditional business techniques toward helping IU technology experts advance IU medical and life sciences research. The joint internship program, being offered by the IU Pervasive Technology Institute (PTI) and the Center for the Business of Life Sciences (CBLS) at the Kelley School of Business, will employ a total of six student interns on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses during the spring 2009 semester.

Indiana University has been awarded $336,000 to help launch a new experimental network research infrastructure that one day will lead to the future of the Internet. Part of the Global Environment for Network Innovations (GENI) Project, IU is among 29 academic and industrial research teams to receive subcontract awards totaling $12 million from BBN Technologies, an advanced technology solutions firm. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, GENI prototyping supports the development of a national-scale suite of infrastructure for experimental research in groundbreaking network science and engineering.

The Indiana University Faculty Podcasting Initiative will support more than 60 innovative faculty members as they explore the potential of podcasting in higher education and student learning. Supported by Apple and AT&T with equipment and software -- and with the guidance of the IU centers for teaching and learning -- faculty projects will commence in the fall semester of 2008.

IU digital artist Margaret Dolinsky is the 2008 Outstanding Educator in Science, Technology, and Engineering. Presented by the Women and Hi Tech organization, the award acknowledges the tremendous impact educators have on their students and the role they play in creating opportunities for growth and development. Dolinsky holds a dual appointment as an assistant professor in the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts at Indiana University Bloomington and as a research scientist in the IU Advanced Visualization Lab (AVL).
