Indiana University's Herman B Wells Library Map Collections has been designated as the repository for the original Indiana Sanborn paper maps (produced between 1883 and 1966). Sanborn Fire Insurance maps were first created in 1867 for assessing fire insurance liability for buildings in U.S. cities.  More »

Ireland's ninth president

Indiana University alumnus Michael D. Higgins will become Ireland's ninth president, IU announced Oct. 31. "On behalf of Indiana University, I would like to congratulate IU alumnus Michael D. Higgins upon his election as the ninth president of Ireland and culmination of a long and distinguished career as a politician, lecturer, author and human rights activist," IU President Michael McRobbie said.  More »

What is anthropology?

"We don't need a lot more anthropologists in the state . . . I want to spend our dollars giving people science, technology, engineering, math degrees," said Florida Governor Rick Scott recently. Anthropology scholar and 2007 Indiana University Northwest graduate Charlotte Noble saw his comments as an opportunity to educate the public about the contributions of anthropologists.  More »

Two senior Army ROTC cadets at Indiana University are ranked among the top 20 cadets in the nation. Senior cadets John Brogan and Alex Clem rank in the top 1 percent of their peers, according to Lt. Col. Michael Ogden, director of IU's military science program. Both are enrolled in pre-medicine programs at IU.  More »
